Westmoreland County campus clippings: Seton Hill baseball adds Belle Vernon grad to staff

The Seton Hill baseball team added Parker Lynn to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.

Lynn, a Belle Vernon graduate, will coach catchers and work with offensive details. He played one season at Cal U, where he later coached. He also spent a season as an assistant at West Liberty and was director of operations at Gardner-Webb.

Lynn, who married former Greensburg Salem and Marist softball standout Jayne Oberdorf, most recently coached the new Johnstown Millrats team in the Prospect League.

Women’s volleyball

Saint Vincent: Junior libero Madie Marsico was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. She registered 64 digs across three matches.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Alexis Ray was named to the Bearcat Challenge at Saint Vincent.

Slippery Rock: Junior Stephanie O’Donnell (Penn-Trafford) had five kills for the Rock in a 3-0 win over Lock Haven.

Westminster: Samantha Kelly (Penn-Trafford) passed around a career-high 46 assists as the Titans opened the year with a 3-1 win over Allegheny.

Women’s soccer

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Tiffany Michalek was named the AMCC Offensive Player of the Week. Michalek racked up 10 points across three games for the Bobcats (3-0). She had two goals and as assist againt Thiel, had a goal and another helper against Hood then had one goal when UPG played Wilson. UPG outscored its first three opponents, 3-1.

Seton Hill: Junior Grace Kenyon was named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week. Kenyon helped Seton Hill blank West Liberty, 1-0, in the season opener, making nine saves in the victory.

Westminster: Freshman Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. She had two goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over John Carroll, and added a goal in a 5-1 win aaginst Penn State Altoona.

Men’s golf

Penn State Altoona: Freshman Logan Divald (Norwin) opened the Gatorade Collegiate, hosted by Wooster College, with a 73. It is the fourth-lowest score in program history.

Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Spencer Beran shot 71 to win the Pitt-Bradford Fall Invitational.

Men’s cross country

Cal U: Junior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) finished 11th with a time of 15:58.8 at Cal’s Marty Uher Invitational at Roadman Park.

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Tim Patterson finished second (15:39) and sophomore John Hurley took third (15:46) at the Fisher Invitational, hosted by Westminster.

Westmoreland County CC: Dante Frescura opened the year with a victory at the Wolfpack Invitational.

Women’s cross country

Saint Vincent: Senior Lauren Aston finished second in a time of 19:29, while the Bearcats finished third in the team standings, at the Fisher Invitational.

Westmoreland County CC: Anna Rubino finished fifth at the season-opening Wolfpack Invitational.

Waynesburg: Sophomore Mallory Miller (Ligonier Valley) placed 35th in the season-opening Cougar Challenge 5K, hosted by Chatham.

Honors

Pitt-Greensburg: Four former Bobcat golfers were selected to the AMCC All-25th Anniversary Team. They are Javon Trout (2015-16), Ken Sask (2000), Chuck Thatcher (1999) and Pete Dzambo (1998).

Trout (Hempfield) was a two-time AMCC Player of the Year and the conference’s newcomer of the year. He was the individual medalist at the AMCC championship in 2015. Sask, Thatcher and Dzambo also are former AMCC players of the year. Sask and Dzambo were individual medalists in 2000 and 1998.
