Westminster’s Samantha Kelly has been a steady contributor in this shortened women’s volleyball season in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. A shortened season capped with a championship.
The junior setter from Penn-Trafford was particularly effective in the PAC title match for the top-seeded Titans as she registered 21 assists and 15 digs in a 3-0 victory over No. 3 Grove City.
It was the eighth 3-0 win in 11 matches for the Titans (10-1).
Kelly led the team with 6.79 assists per set.
Baseball
Gannon: Junior pitcher Devin Judy (Belle Vernon) was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. Judy led his team to a 5-1 win over Seton Hill, the Griffins’ first loss of the season, as he worked his second complete game of the season. He struck out nine and allowed four hits against a potent lineup. He has 215 career Ks, which ranks him second on Gannon’s all-time list.
Grove City: Freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Penn-Trafford) tripled to help the Wolverines to a 13-4 win over Westminster.
Saint Vincent: With 4-3 and 20-1 scores, the Bearcats swept past Geneva to move to 12-9 overall and 11-6 in the PAC. Senior TJ Dailey homered, sophomore Jordan Sabol (Penn-Trafford) had two hits and junior Zach Barberich doubled in the first game. Dailey’s homer came in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, SVC pounded out 19 hits with Dailey going 3 for 3 with five RBIs, finishing a homer short of the cycle, and freshman Tyler Becker finishing 2 for 3 with a homer and four RBIs.
Seton Hill: The Griffins finally returned to action after eight consecutive postponements related to covid-19 protocols. They had not played in 19 days when they hosted Gannon. The offense wasted little time restarting as the Griffins scored eight times in the first inning on the way to a 12-4 win.
Junior Vincenzo Rauso doubled and hit a grand slam, while sophomore Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) homered and drove in two, senior Jordan Fiedor scored three times, and senior Ben Vicini moved to 3-0 on the mound as he eight struck out eight.
Seton Hill, ranked No. 1 in the NCBWA Atlantic Region, completed the sweep with a 7-2 win in Game 2, but dropped the first game of a doubleheader the next day — their first defeate of 2021 — to move to 14-1.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out a career-high 10 as the Presidents downed Chatham, 7-0, to improve to 22-0.
Horvat is 5-0 with a 1.82 ERA, with 44 Ks and seven walks.
Westmoreland County CC: Sophomore Noah Sweeney (Greensburg Salem) doubled and drove in three runs, sophomore Tommy Kegerreis (Franklin Regional) went 4 for 4, and sophomore Matt Henderson (Latrobe) drove in a pair as the Wolfpack (4-20) downed CCBC Catonsville, 13-1, in five innings to snap a nine-game losing streak.
Freshman Reid Amundson (Greensburg Salem) went 3 for 3, Sweeney went 2 for 3 and Henderson had two RBIs in a 9-4 loss to Potomac State.
Softball
Clarion: Sophomore shortstop Alexandra Brentzel (Norwin) had a pair of run-scoring doubles in an 8-4 win over Slippery Rock. In an 11-10, come-from behind win over Slippery Rock, she delivered an RBI triple.
Mercyhurst: Redshirt junior Kaitlin Hoffner (Hempfield) picked up the win in relief and freshman Morgan Hilty earned her second save of the season, as the Lakers defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 10-4.
Senior outfielder Sarah Koscho (Penn-Trafford) his a three-run homer in the victory.
Saint Vincent: Jessica Persin (Hempfield) hit her second homer of the season, and Johnna Karas (Norwin) went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in four runs, but the Bearcats (9-14-1) lost to Washington & Jefferson, 10-9.
Junior Kelsey Tobin (Hempfield) is leading the team in batting average (.439) and has 17 RBIs. Sophomore Mallory Halleck (Franklin Regional) has a .418 average, 15 RBIs and 14 runs.
Seton Hill: After eight straight postponements, the Griffins returned to action and split a doubleheader with Gannon. Junior Morgan Toal launched a grand slam to get the offense started in a 4-0 victory over Gannon. Senior Nicole McClendon added a double, while freshman pitcher Lauren Dellett picked up her seventh win of the season with a one-hit shutout.
Dellett, who also tossed a complete game Sunday against Gannon, was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.
Football
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (2-2) erupted offensively in a 56-26 victory over Waynesburg. Sophomore quarterback Brady Walker completed 14 of 16 passes for 329 yards and five touchdowns, including a 75-yarder to senior Jeremy Wodarak, while senior Mike Stasko rushed for 126 yards and two scores, and senior receiver Keith Kalp (Mt. Pleasant) had four catches for 108 yards and a TD.
Walker, who completed a pass to eight receivers, was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Senior linebacker Cam Norris led the defense with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Waynesburg: Sophomore running back Justin Flack (Waynesburg) ran for 158 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in the Yellow Jackets’ 56-26 loss to Saint Vincent.
