Westmoreland campus clippings: Latrobe grad Zach Kokoska shines in Big 12 tourney

Kansas State junior slugger Zach Kokoska (Latrobe) is among the top home run hitters in NCAA Division I baseball.

He also was one of the top players in the Big 12 Tournament.

After he helped the Wildcats (34-23) reach the semifinals, Kokoska was named to the all-tournament team.

In five games, Kokoska hit .421 with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs. K-State finished 3-2 in this year’s tournament, posting wins against No. 5 Texas Tech, No. 8 TCU and Baylor.

The Wildcats were not selected to the NCAA Tournament.

For the season, Kokoska is hitting .363 with 15 homers, 46 RBIs, 56 runs and a team-best 77 hits.

Baseball

Saint Vincent: Senior Matt Evans was named to the Division III All-Mideast Region Second Team. The dual-roled Bearcat hit .371 with 24 runs, 26 RBIs, and eight doubles. As a pitcher, he was 4-2 in 20 appearances with seven saves, 24 Ks and a 2.04 ERA.

Men’s golf

Notre Dame: Sophomore Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) was selected to the NCAA Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team. Jackson played 21 rounds and had the second-best average on the team at 71.67. He took fifth at the Augusta Haskins tournament and finished in the top 25 four times this season.

West Virginia: Senior Mark Goetz (Greensburg/The Kiski School) was named to the NCAA Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team. He is just the second player in school history to achieve the honor.

Goetz is the first WVU player to compete in the NCAA regional qualifier, where he finished second (8-under-par) in Nobelsville, Ind.
