The Pittsburgh Pirates value versatility, and Jared Triolo was honored for his ability to play multiple positions at a high level by winning his first NL Gold Glove Award in the utility role.
Triolo edged fellow finalists Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kike Hernandez of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the award sponsored by Rawlings, announced Sunday night on ESPN.

Triolo committed only three errors in 1,010 2/3 innings and finished with seven defensive runs saved. He finished first in fielding percentage at third base (.985) and was tied for first at second (.995) among NL players with at least 300 innings played.
The 26-year-old won the starting job at second base out of spring training and compiled six DRS in 374 2/3 innings there over 47 games. He moved to third base to replace the injured Ke’Bryan Hayes and had two DRS in 527 innings over 61 games. Triolo also played nine games at first base, eight at shortstop and one in right field.

The awards for the nine traditional defensive positions are handed out via a combination of manager and coaching votes in addition to factoring in SABR’s Defensive Index. For the utility position, Rawlings collaborates with SABR “to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process.”
Triolo, who also won a Gold Glove in the minors, joins Hayes (2023) and catcher Jacob Stallings (2021) as NL Gold Glove winners under Pirates manager Derek Shelton.
San Francisco third baseman Matt Chapman won his fifth Gold Glove, and Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was among 14 first-time winners of baseball’s most famous fielding honor.
Cleveland second baseman Andres Gimenez and left fielder Steven Kwan won for the third consecutive year along with Arizona first baseman Christian Walker and Chicago Cubs left fielder Ian Happ.
Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle won for the second straight season.
Six teams had two Gold Gloves winners each, with the Guardians joined by Colorado, Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Francisco and Seattle.
AL first-time winners in addition to Witt include Royals pitcher Seth Lugo, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Minnesota first baseman Carlos Santana, Houston third baseman Alex Bregman, Toronto center fielder Daulton Varsho, Boston right fielder Wilyer Abreu and Mariners utilityman Dylan Moore.
NL first-time winners included Atlanta pitcher Chris Sale, Giants catcher Patrick Bailey, Milwaukee second baseman Brice Turang and right fielder Sal Frelick and Colorado shortstop Ezequiel Tovar.
Bregman earned a $50,000 bonus, Gimenez, Lugo, Moore and Witt $50,000 and Santana $25,000.
There also were 14 first-time winners in 2022.
