Jamir Jones, one of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ core special-teams players, re-signed with the team Monday via a one-year deal.
An outside linebacker by trade, Jones was part of the Steelers’ punt and kickoff coverage and return teams in 2022. He appeared in all 17 games, and only four players played more special-teams snaps for the Steelers than Jones’ 251.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Jones also played 86 defensive snaps, typically serving as the No. 4 edge defender.
Jones had no leverage as an exclusive rights free agent, almost all of whom end up agreeing to one-year contracts for the league minimum.
Undrafted in 2020 out of Notre Dame, Jones was cut during his rookie training camp with the Houston Texans. But Jones caught the eye of the Steelers’ contingent at the 2021 Notre Dame pro day, and after a strong training camp made the active roster to start the regular season.
Jones even made a start on defense over the 2021 season’s first three games with the Steelers, but he was waived and split the rest of that year with the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars. Though he finished 2021 with the Jaguars, Jones was eligible for a Super Bowl ring after playing 10 games for the Rams.
But when the Jaguars made him part of their final camp cuts this past August, the Steelers claimed him. He was part of a group that backed up T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith in 2022.
