Sometimes, individual accomplishments come in unique circumstances.
Take the manner in which the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Osvaldo Bido picked up his first MLB win Sunday for example.
Bido, who was one of seven pitchers the Pirates utilized in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Arizona, was the winning pitcher, delivering 1⅓ innings over the fourth and fifth, allowing a lone hit.
“That’s awesome,” reliever Colin Holderman said on the AT&T SportsNet postgame show. “Once you get called up, it’s the debut and then it’s all the milestones after that. Getting your first win is always a big step. Congratulations to him.”
The 27-year-old Bido was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis in mid-June and made his MLB debut on the 14th.
Sliding into the Pirates’ rotation, Bido’s first five appearances had been all been starts before Sunday, which was his inaugural relief outing.
Bido (1-1, 4.44 ERA) had earned a no decision in four of those five starts.
Having started in Los Angeles on July 5, Bido pitched Sunday on three days’ rest, answering the call for the Pirates and helping the club end a four-game losing streak.
Bido required just 11 pitches in Sunday’s outing and managed to pitch a scoreless fourth despite allowing a leadoff double to Christian Walker.
“That’s really cool to see,” said manager Derek Shelton. “He came in and did a really good job after throwing 80 pitches (Wednesday). It was an important inning and a third for us and he did a great job.”
Over 24⅓ innings pitched so far this year, Bido has allowed 12 runs to go along with 22 strikeouts and 10 walks.
