Throughout his career, Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley was a winner on many levels, starting four state championship games in Virginia and earning MVP honors in the Big Ten title game in 2016.
But the captain of the Nittany Lions fell into the sixth round of the draft, the 197th selection overall, when the Baltimore Ravens took his name off the board Saturday afternoon.
He had one of the most productive careers by a quarterback in Penn State history, earning second team All-Big Ten last season. His passing numbers fell from 3,570 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior to 2,530 and 18 as a senior. But he rushed for 798 yards last season.
McSorley, 6-foot, 202 pounds, will get a chance to compete for the Ravens’ No. 1 backup job behind Lamar Jackson.
Edge rusher Shareef Miller was the first Penn State player drafted Saturday when he was chosen by his hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles, with the final pick of the fourth round (No. 138 overall).
He joins Penn State teammate Miles Sanders, a running back from Woodland Hills, who was drafted by the Eagles in the second round Friday.
Miller, 6-4, 254, was third team All-Big Ten last season when he started 12 games with 41 tackles, 15 for a loss and 7½ sacks.
In the fifth round, Penn State cornerback Amani Oruwariye went to the Detroit Lions (No. 146 overall).
Oruwariye started making a name for himself when he was named second team All-Big Ten as a junior without starting a game. He still managed to intercept four passes and break up eight others.
Last season, Oruwariye, 6-2, 205, broke up 12 passes and intercepted three for the Nittany Lions last season when he ascended to first team All-Big Ten.
Penn State safety Nick Scott, an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick who had three interceptions, four pass breakups and a blocked kick last season, went to the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round (No. 243 overall).
