A total of 11 teams at Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic progress based on scores from the 2014-15 through 2017-18 school years.

The awards are presented annually to teams finishing among the top 10 percent of their respective sport.

Among the four Penn State teams recognized was the wrestling team, which has won four consecutive national championships while earning the academic award five years in a row.

Penn State’s women’s cross country and fencing and men’s golf also were honored.

At West Virginia, the men’s basketball, rifle, golf and tennis teams were recognized. The basketball team has been recognized in four consecutive years and six in the past 10.

Pitt teams honored were women’s basketball, cross country and tennis. The Panthers have had 25 teams recognized in the 14 years since the APR has been tracked, including three or more in each of the past four years.

The university discontinued the tennis program at the end of this season.
