While in the midst of assembling the nation’s third-ranked 2022 recruiting class, Penn State received its first verbal commitment from a 2023 prospect Thursday when guard Alex Birchmeier announced his plans to enroll.

Birchmeier, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound rising junior at Broad Run (Va.) High School, is the No. 1 interior offensive lineman in the nation (No. 19 overall) in the class of ‘23, according to Top247.

He has scholarship offers from 30 Power 5 schools, including Ohio State and Notre Dame, the only teams ranked by Rivals.com ahead of the Nittany Lions in the ‘22 rankings.

Also offering Birchmeier a scholarship ahead of the December signing period are Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, LSU, Miami, Oregon, Michigan, Oklahoma, Pitt, Rutgers and West Virginia.

Rivals ranks Birchmeier as the No. 61 overall prospect in the nation.
