STATE COLLEGE — The Penn State men’s basketball team’s matchup at VCU scheduled for Saturday has been canceled because of positive covid-19 results within the Nittany Lions program, the university announced Thursday.
The game will not be rescheduled, and the status of future games will be determined at a later date.
After Saturday’s now-canceled matchup in Richmond, Va., Penn State’s next scheduled game is against Quinnipiac at the Bryce Jordan Center on Dec. 22. After that, Penn State is scheduled to host Delaware State on Dec. 29 before Big Ten play begins in earnest against Indiana on Jan. 2 at home.
Penn State Athletics released a statement with its announcement:
“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the broader community are of the utmost importance. Therefore, as part of the protocols established by the Big Ten Conference and Penn State Athletics medical staff, and in consultation with University, local and national officials and guidelines, individuals with a positive test have been put into isolation. In addition to isolation, contact tracing procedures have been implemented, which includes testing for those individuals who might have been exposed.”
Penn State is 5-5 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play so far this season under first-year coach Micah Shrewsberry. In their last game, the Nittany Lions fell at then-No. 19 Michigan State, 80-64.
