For the second time this week, the Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forward Alex Nylander from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League under emergency conditions.

Per the league’s collective bargaining agreement with the NHL Players’ Association, recalls under emergency conditions are permitted when incumbent players on the NHL roster are not available.

Additionally, following the NHL’s trade deadline (which was March 3), NHL teams are permitted four regular recalls per league rules. Emergency recalls do not count toward that figure.

The team announced Nylander’s recall Friday but did not report which players may not be available for Saturday’s home game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Nylander was recalled under emergency conditions Tuesday with forwards Mikael Granlund (illness) and Bryan Rust (personal matter) absent.

That same day, Nylander made his debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins and recorded an assist while logging 14 minutes, 56 seconds of ice time on 21 shifts. He largely played on the second line with forwards Evgeni Malkin and Jason Zucker in that contest.

By Thursday, Nylander, a right-handed shot, was assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Nylander, 25, is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s leading scorer with 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in 54 games.

Note: The Penguins canceled a scheduled practice Friday and held off-ice workouts.
