The Pittsburgh Penguins placed rookie forward Rutger McGroarty on injured reserve on Wednesday morning due to a concussion.
This transaction comes after McGroarty was injured during a practice session in Cranberry on Tuesday.
While battling for a puck during a two-on-two drill, McGroartry collided with a teammate and immediately experienced discomfort. Retreating to the bench, McGroarty appeared to be holding his head and neck while being examined by an athletic trainer.
Given the uncertain nature of concussions, there is no set timetable for recovery.
In 16 games this season, McGroarty has scored three points (two goals, one assist) while averaging 12:13 of ice time per contest. He has predominantly skated on the left wing of the third line.
McGroarty suffered an undisclosed injury just prior to the start of training camp in September. That ailment landed him on the season-opening injured non-roster list. He did not make his season debut at the NHL level until Dec. 1.
