Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith, United States lose to Germany in IIHF semifinals

A look at how players with connections to the Pittsburgh Penguins have done in the ongoing International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship tournament:

Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith made 22 saves on 26 shots for the the United States in a 4-3 overtime loss to Germany in the semifinals Saturday at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland.

The loss was the first in the tournament for DeSmith and the United States.

Former Penguins forward prospect Frederik Tiffels had two goals, including the winning score at 67:32 of the overtime period.

Penguins forward Drew O’Connor recorded two assists for the United States. Serving as a second-line center, O’Connor logged 19:05 of ice time on 24 shifts, had one shot and was 9 for 16 (56.2%) on faceoffs.

Primarily deployed as the United States’ top center, Penguins forward Nick Bonino had 17:50 of ice time on 27 shifts and was 13 for 23 on faceoffs (56.5%).

Highlights:

The United States will face Latvia in the bronze-medal game at 8:20 a.m. Sunday.

Germany will face Canada in the gold-medal game at 1:20 p.m.

Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph logged 21:55 of ice time on 34 shifts for Canada in a 4-2 win against Latvia at Nokia Arena.

Primarily utilized on the third pairing, Joseph had one shot.
