Penguins forward Drew O’Connor leads United States to opening win in IIHF World Championship

A look at how players with connections to the Penguins have done in the ongoing International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship Tournament:

Penguins forward Drew O’Connor scored the winning goal and had two assists for the United States which claimed a 4-1 win against Finland in a tournament-opening preliminary round game at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland on Friday.

O’Connor also had two shots during 16:49 of ice time on 25 shifts and was 7 for 14 (50.0%) in faceoffs.

Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith made 23 saves on 24 shots and earned player of the game honors for the United States.

Primarily deployed as the United States’ first-line center, Penguins forward Nick Bonino recorded 21:19 of ice time on 25 shifts and had two shots. He also was 13 for 21 (61.9%) on faceoffs.

The United States’ next game is against Hungary on Sunday, 8:20 a.m. (EDT).

Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph clocked 19:01 of ice time on 27 shifts and had one shot for Canada which shut out Latvia, 6-0, at Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia.

Canada’s next game is against Slovenia on Sunday, 8:20 a.m. (EDT).

Penguins forward Alex Nylander logged 13:00 of ice time on 17 shifts and recorded one shot for Sweden which defeated Germany, 1-0, at Nokia Arena.

Sweden’s next game is against Austria on Sunday, 4:20 p.m. (EDT).
