Callie Sowers always has had a flair for pitching in big games.

The larger the stage, the harder she throws.

And when the Bloomsburg junior ace is locked in, good luck hitting her.

Slippery Rock was fortunate to get a foul tip Wednesday morning during the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament.

Sowers, a former Hempfield standout, opened the postseason with a bang, tossing a no-hitter as the Huskies won 1-0 to advance to play East Stroudsburg on Wednesday afternoon.

She struck out 15, walked three and forced three groundouts and three flyouts at Veteran’s Park in Quakertown. It was the 62nd no-hitter in program history and the first since 2017.

Freshman Josie Straigis (Latrobe) had a double for Bloomsburg (32-20), the No. 5 seed from the PSAC East.

Sowers, a first-team All-PSAC East selection, improved to 22-5 for the season. She has struck out 235 in 179 2/3 innings.
