Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton surrendered to authorities in Florida on Sunday night on domestic violence accusations, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Sutton turned himself in at 8:30 p.m. on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony, at the Orient Road Jail in Tampa, Fla.

Last week, authorities there sought information on 29-year-old Sutton’s whereabouts after issuing the warrant for his arrest. Sutton’s attorney contacted authorities March 25 to report that he was going to turn himself in, but didn’t until Sunday, police said.

“Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.

The charge is connected to a domestic violence incident that reportedly involved Sutton and a woman around 5 a.m. March 7, authorities told the Detroit Free Press according to the Associated Press.

He was being held at a Tampa jail, according to court records.

During the 2021 and 2022 seasons, he started 31 games for the Steelers, making five interceptions with 95 tackles. The team drafted him in the third round in 2017.

The Detroit Lions signed Sutton to a three-year, $33 million contract that included a $10.9 million signing bonus and $21 million fully guaranteed.

During his only year in Detroit, Sutton totaled 65 total tackles and one interception during the Lions’ season, which ended in the NFC Championship Game. He was released by the team after the arrest warrant against him was announced.
