North Allegheny graduate Alex Adams has made an immediate impact on the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team.
Adams, an 18-year-old forward from Franklin Park, leads the Tartans with 10 goals, two shy of the school’s freshman record. Six of her goals have been game winners.
She was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III-South Rookie of the Month for September. In only five starts, she led the Tartans with seven goals and 15 points.
She now has a team-high 23 points, including three assists, in 14 games and 10 starts. She ranks third in the University Athletic Association in goals and points.
Adams, a 2018 Top Drawer Soccer Fall High School Season Girls State All-Star, said she is excited both she and the team are having a successful season.
“I’m so grateful to have such a hardworking team to inspire me to compete at the highest level,” she said. “I want our team to have the best season possible and, hopefully, make it to the NCAA tournament.”
With three games left, the Tartans were 10-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the University Athletic Association. In one stretch, they had a six-game unbeaten streak.
They were third in the UAA, which will receive one automatic berth to the NCAA championship in December. They ranked 23rd in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA Division III National Poll as of Oct. 29.
Tartan coach Yon Struble said the team has been excited about Adams, who plans to study mechanical engineering, since she committed.
“Our goals for Alex are to continue to compete at a high level and help her team win games,” Struble said. “She has an incredible work rate and game mentality. If she’s not scoring goals, she’s creating them or defending with an incredible tenacity.”
