Duquesne’s new look in the first season after former coach Keith Dambrot’s retirement will extend into the players’ locker room.

Former Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Maximus Edwards, who played the past two seasons at George Washington, announced his commitment to Duquesne coach Dru Joyce III on Monday night, giving the Dukes five transfers who have said they will enroll this year. He joins forwards Alex Williams (Furman) and Jahsean Corbett (Chicago State) and guards Cameron Crawford (Marshall) and Tre Dinkins (Canisius).

In two games against Duquesne the past two seasons, Edwards scored 12 and 15 points.

A 6-foot-5 guard, Edwards improved his per-game scoring average from 10.5 points when he was named A-10 Rookie of the Year in 2022-2023 to 12.4 this past season. He was GW’s first A-10 Rookie of the Year since 2000 after transferring from Kansas State.

In that first season for GW, Edwards appeared in all 32 games (27 starts) and played the fourth-most minutes (1,078) by a freshman in the nation. He led all conference rookies in rebounding (6.5) and finished second among A-10 freshmen in scoring, fourth in steals (27) and sixth in assists (46).

Edwards shot 42.7% from the field, 35.8% from beyond the 3-point line and 86.7% from the foul line last season. He reached double-figure scoring in 22 games, with four double-doubles and five games with double-digit rebounds.

During his prep career at Our Saviour Lutheran School in the Bronx, N.Y., he helped his team win 50 games in two seasons.
