The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team had its NCAA Division III national championship hopes come to an end Friday.
The Tartans lost 2-1 to No. 1 Messiah (22-1-2) on penalty kicks in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Messiah’s Maddie Kohl, Megan Mansfield and Brooke Firestone scored in the shootout, and Maddy Lui was the only Tartans player to convert.
Carnegie Mellon (14-5-3) played in front for most of the game after Alex Adams (North Allegheny) finished off a Helena Spencer pass in the 25th minute.
Messiah’s Kayla Herr scored the equalizer in the 77th minute.
The Tartans had outscored opponents 11-0 through the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament. In the quarterfinals, they defeated St. Thomas (Minn.) in a 6-5 shootout to punch their ticket to the Final Four.
The Tartans were the first women’s team in school history to reach the semifinals of an NCAA Tournament.
