Ron Everhart, the former head men’s basketball coach at Duquesne who spent the past 11 seasons as an assistant under Bob Huggins at West Virginia, will assume a newly created position under first-year WVU coach Josh Eilert. Everhart will serve as the program’s director of community relations and player outreach.
Everhart said the position involves fund-raising for name, image and likeness endeavors and the Mountaineer Athletic Club.
“I am very fortunate and grateful for this new career opportunity,” Everhart said.
Eilert announced the makeup of his entire staff Sunday, naming former players Da’Sean Butler, Jordan McCabe and Alex Ruoff as assistants, along with DerMarr Johnson.
• Butler, the all-time winningest player in WVU history (107 victories) and a member of the WVU Sports Hall of Fame, was a graduate assistant on Huggins’ staff in 2012-13. He was assistant video coordinator for the New York Knicks during the 2022-23 season. He also has been an assistant coach for the College Park Skyhawks in the NBA G League and an assistant coach at Wheeling University. He also served as an NBA Summer League coach for the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics and as an NBA G League Elite Camp head and assistant coach.
• Ruoff, who is WVU’s all-time leader in career 3-point field goals, was a graduate assistant last season. He played 12 seasons of professional basketball.
• McCabe played in 94 games for WVU from 2019-21 and the past two seasons at UNLV. For UNLV, he played in 60 games (34 starts), averaging 6.4 and 5.5 points per game. He earned his undergraduate degree in sport management from WVU in 2021 and received an MBA Certification from UNLV.
• Johnson joined the Mountaineer staff Jan. 16 and will enter his first full season as an assistant. He played 16 seasons of professional basketball, including seven in the NBA. Prior to coming to Morgantown, W.Va., Johnson was a member of the basketball staff at Cincinnati.
Other appointments include Jay Kuntz continuing as the director of player personnel/recruiting, Trent Michaels named director of men’s basketball operations, Jared Kortsen named video and scouting coordinator and Tyler Cheng the athletic data statistician. Michaels will assume a new title after spending last season as operations coordinator while Kortsen and Cheng will remain in their current positions.
