Letter to the editor: When will we see another victory?

Recently we paused to observe Memorial Day and recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our flag and nation. These heroes brought us our glorious back-to-back World War victories.

Many others fought in wars (conflicts, conflagrations, etc.) not officially declared or fully supported by a government that put politics ahead of ultimate victory. Sadly, scores of politicians have come and gone who placed American lives in hostile environments without the support needed to get the job done.

Our “non-winning” streak goes back to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and all the way to today. Wars not won, not because of a lack of heroism or determination by those forced, or sent, to fight. The outcomes of these wars were the result of the stupidity, timidity and incompetence of the leadership. Opportunities to change world history in America’s favor were frittered away by a lack of will by those in government. Lies were told by Democrats and Republicans alike to cater to political interests (Gulf of Tonkin, WMDs). This mentality has carried over to the present day.

It’s easy to come up with a list of our non-victories. The wars on drugs, crime, poverty and homelessness have now evolved into wars on common sense, truth and facts. These “wars” have been “fought” for decades now. Anybody see victory on the horizon? If anything, things are getting worse.

With mass shootings and tragedies almost daily, I’ve noticed the flag flying at half staff more often than not. Perhaps it’s time to leave it there?
