The price to be an annual member of the Girl Scouts of the USA is going to increase over the next two years, according to news reports.
For the next year, membership dues will stay at $25, but it will increase to $45 in 2026 and to $65 in 2027, CBS News reported.
The price hike was announced during a Girl Scouts National Council Session on Saturday, rejecting an initial proposal to increase dues to $85 per year.
CNN reported that 900 delegates were present at the council meeting. Dues will remain at $25 for 2025, CNN said.
It’s the first time in eight years the Girl Scouts organization, which has about 2 million members including adults, has chosen to raise its membership dues, according to CBS News. Approximately $38 million was generated from dues last year.
“This investment provides GSUSA with the opportunity to implement initiatives that will have a lasting impact on our Girl Scout councils, volunteers and the girls and families we serve. We are committed to providing financial assistance to all who need it,” a spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch in a statement.
The intention behind the increase is to reduce red ink, CBS News reported, because the national organization is projecting a net operating loss of about $5 million for this fiscal year.
Membership dues are the Girl Scout’s largest source of revenue, CNN reported, generating $38 million in 2023.
The news comes after the price of Girl Scout cookies was raised from$5 to $6 this January.
