Many do not agree with Pennsylvania’s order about wearing masks in stores that remain open.
In an unscientific TribLIVE.com poll about Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine’s order that essential businesses provide masks for employees and turn away customers who do not have a mask, about 60% of respondents believe the state has overstepped its boundaries.
Of more than 40,000 responses as of 8 a.m. Friday, over 24,000 respondents said the state overstepped in its mandate that customers and employees wear masks. The order goes into effect at 8 p.m. Sunday.
Gov. Tom Wolf in March ordered first the closure of all nonessential businesses, followed by a broader order closing the physical locations what the state deemed all non-life-sustaining operations.
“Our essential employees stepped up to the plate and are keeping us safe, healthy, fed and sheltered during this time,” Wolf said during a virtual news conference. “We all need to thank them by doing everything we can to prevent ourselves from spreading the virus to them.”
About 37% of respondents said “It’s about time” that the state institute this policy, and fewer than 2% of respondents said they are shopping only online these days.
Pennsylvania has reported more than 700 deaths and 27,000 cases of covid-19 since the state’s first reported case March 6.
