State police were called to Bedford County home Sunday where they found 90 dogs, most packed in kennels stacked on top of each other in an “unimaginable” scene, officials said.

Volunteers from eight humane societies were called to help rescue the dogs, which included breeds from Pomeranians to Beagles to Labrador retrievers, according to WTAJ. The home is on Old Route 220 in Bedford borough, Bedford County.

Joe Zolna, board president of the Central PA Humane Society in Blair County, told WTAJ it was the worst scene he had ever witnessed while working with the humane society.

“It’s just unimaginable,” he told the news crew.

The television station reported the dogs were covered in feces with matted and dirty fur. Updated conditions of the dogs were not immediately known.

The Bedford County Humane Society will be taking the majority of the dogs. The rescue posted on its Facebook page Sunday it had to close “due to an emergency,” to be able to rescue all the animals.

It posted an update Sunday night saying it desperately needed blankets, towels, donations and volunteers to show up Monday.

“All of these dogs need bathed, nail trims and many need groomed, as well,” the shelter said on the post.

The shelter was already full with more than 40 dogs before the emergency rescue of dogs that need “extra TLC, and we just don’t have enough employees to do it all!”

It created a “wish list” from the online retailer Chewy to help the shelter get the supplies it needs. It also is accepting monetary donations on its website.

“There is A LOT of work that needs to be done before any of these dogs can be considered for adoption,” the shelter said. “Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!”

Police were investigating the situation and how the homeowners came to have so many dogs.
