Walk-in mammograms will be available this spring through Allegheny Health Network — at both the Allegheny General Hospital Breast Center and North Fayette Health + Wellness Pavilion.
The campaign will run from April 1 through June 14 for women over 40 and anyone younger with a family history of breast cancer. They can either walk in without an appointment or self-schedule their mammograms during the spring and summer.
The walk-in appointments will be offered from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Those interested don’t have to be an established AHN patient. The mammograms should take 20 minutes, according to Dr. Suzanne Coopey, director of Breast Surgery for AHN and Chair of the Breast Cancer Program for the AHN Cancer Institute.
Patients cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding, experiencing current breast issues or have had recent upper body surgeries or mobility-limiting surgeries, AHN said. Those interested also cannot have received a mammogram already within the last 12 months.
Walk-in patients will be responsible for co-pays and any other out-of-pocket expenses.
“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,” Coopey said. “Due to improved treatments and advocacy for regular mammography screenings, breast cancer mortality in the U.S. has dropped more than 40 percent in the last few decades.”
