Six dogs were killed Wednesday night in a fire that destroyed a wood-frame kennel in North Huntingdon, a fire chief said Thursday.

The kennel at Bowser’s Dog Services was in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene at 3031 Baker School Road, Larimer fire Chief William Hardy said. A neighbor reported the fire to Westmoreland 911, Hardy said.

A house adjacent to the kennel was not damaged.

One person may have suffered injuries while attempting to rescue a dog, Hardy said.

The cause of the fire, which was reported about 9:30 p.m., is being investigated by North Huntingdon police fire investigator Sgt. Nick Dreistadt, Hardy said. Dreistadt could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The Larimer fire department was assisted by other North Huntingdon units, as well as firefighers from Irwin, North Irwin and Penn Township, Hardy said. Tankers from the Monroeville, White Valley and Rillton fire departments provided water at the scene, Hardy said.

Firefighters were at the scene for about 212 hours, Hardy said.
