Westmoreland and Monroeville malls soon will extend their hours, which were reduced over the summer to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Shoppers will have an extra hour Monday through Saturday starting Oct. 16, said Stacey Keating, spokeswoman for Chattanooga, Tenn.-based CBL Properties, which owns both malls. Hours will move from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday to 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., she said.

Hours will remain the same on Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Westmoreland Mall, and noon to 6 p.m. at Monroeville Mall. Both facilities will still follow covid-related measures, including requiring face masks and promoting social distancing.

Both malls shuttered in March when Gov. Tom Wolf ordered all non-life-sustaining businesses to close to help stop the virus from spreading. At the time, restaurants at the mall were permitted to remain open for take-out or delivery orders only.

By the end of May, retailers with outside entrances slowly started to reopen following Wolf’s three-phased reopening plan. The plan followed three designations — green, yellow and red — which determined what businesses could begin to reopen.

Macy’s was one of the first, opening to customers May 22. Weeks later, area malls started opening their doors, including the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer.

Westmoreland and Monroeville malls held off until the second week in June to reopen, following the official announcement that Westmoreland and Allegheny counties were moving to the green phase, Keating said at the time. The extra time gave mall officials the chance to update their website with all the protective measures that were put in place.
