Westmoreland County voters returned incumbent Jared Squires to the treasurer’s office for a third term on Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Westmoreland County Election Bureau.

Squires, 42, a Republican from Mt. Pleasant Township, beat Democratic challenger Matt Mascara, 22, of Rostraver, with nearly 60% of the vote and 96% of the precincts reporting.

Squires stressed his experience, incumbency — he was first elected in 2011 — and ability to run his office in a frugal manner.

In his campaign, Mascara stressed his family’s political heritage — his grandfather and uncle both served in public office in Washington County — and the need for new blood at the county level.

The treasurer’s office is responsible for overseeing money collected and disbursed by the county. The office also collects the hotel rental tax, handles boat registrations and sells dog licenses as well as permits for hunting, fishing and the operation of small games of chance.
