A 77-year-old Penn Township man was killed and two other people were hurt Thursday in a two-vehicle collision along Route 30 in Hempfield, according to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office.
Thomas Ernest Stutz of Harrison City was pronounced dead at the scene of the 12:46 p.m. crash in front of DeLallo’s Italian Market at 6390 Route 30, the coroner’s office reported.
Stutz was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. He pulled out of the store parking lot in an attempt to make a left turn and head west on Route 30. An eastbound Ford Transit van slammed into his truck, according to deputy coroner Sean Hribal.
A passenger in Stutz’s truck and the driver of the van were transported to undisclosed area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries after the crash, Hribal said.
Stutz was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma to his neck. The manner of death was accidental.
Lindsay-Jobe Funeral Home Inc. in Harrison City is in charge of arrangements.
The crashed closed Route 30 for about two hours after the crash. State police are also investigating, but a report was not yet available.
