A male driver was seriously injured after crashing head on into a cement mixer truck on Saturday, according to Ligonier Valley Police.

Sgt. James Friscarella said authorities believe a Subaru Outback was speeding south on Route 271 in Ligonier Township around 9 a.m. when it came upon a black pickup stopped on the road to allow the cement mixer truck to turn onto a side street. The Subaru passed the pickup, collided with the cement mixer truck and bounced off a nearby house, causing major damage.

“It was definitely a traumatic crash,” he said.

It took about 10 minutes for firefighters from Waterford and Wilpen to extricate the driver from the Subaru near the intersection of Nature Run Road. Friscarella said he was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

“The fire department saved his life,” Friscarella said.

The driver of the pickup talked to other witnesses at the scene, but had to leave before police got there, he said. Friscarella asked the driver contact the station at 724-238-5105 to provide a witness statement.
