Jeannette City School District will have flexible instruction Friday to allow students, staff and the community to gather to mourn five lives lost in a house fire last month.
Superintendent Matt Jones said the move will allow those who want to attend a public memorial service at Word of Life Church in Hempfield the ability to do so.
“In Jeannette, we believe some events in life take priority over a traditional day of instruction,” he said.
Jeannette City students will be provided with materials and resources for the remote learning day. Teachers will be available to answer questions.
Friday’s service will be in memory of Tyler J. King, 27, who died March 20, along with his four children Kyson John, 7; Kinzleigh John, 6; Keagan John, 3; and Korbyn John, 1 month. The children’s mother, Miranda John, and her two children — Kaiden, 10, and Kash, 1 — escaped the Guy Street home.
The memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. The church is at 4497 Route 136. A private burial and reception will follow.
