Admission will be free on July 4 at Historic Hanna’s Town, 809 Forbes Trail Road, Hempfield.

In celebration of Independence day, the site will offer hourly tours, with the first one leaving at 11 a.m. and the final one at 3 p.m.

Readings of the Declaration of Independence are scheduled for 12:45 and 2:45 p.m.

“If families attend, we will be offering a picture book read-aloud of ‘Independence Cake,’ a story inspired by the author of the first American cookbook,” says education coordinator Pamela Curtin. Story times will be noon and 2 p.m.

“Our Education Center’s exhibit gallery and museum shop will be open throughout the day, and a re-enactor from Proctor’s Militia will also be present to do demonstrations and talks,” Curtin says.

The gallery in the new History Education Center is hosting its first exhibition, “Scenes of Westmoreland: Visions in Light,” featuring photos taken by members of the Westmoreland Photographers Society.

The show, running through the end of August, includes photos of Westmoreland County historic and cultural sites, landscapes, nature, people and events.

Operated by the Westmoreland Historical Society, Hanna’s Town includes the reconstructed Hanna’s Tavern, three re-located log houses, a reconstructed Revolutionary War-era fort and a wagon shed housing a late 18th-century Conestoga wagon.

Founded in 1773, Hanna’s Town was Westmoreland County’s first seat of government and hosted the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains.
