Hempfield residents soon could have a new way to commemorate loved ones.
The township’s parks and recreation department plans to sell memorial benches and trees that can be placed in parks and at facilities across the township.
“It will be an opportunity for families to commemorate loved ones whether they were lost for any reason or they just want to honor them,” said Aaron Siko, director of the parks and recreation department.
The benches — which would cost $1,300, including installation — would be purchased from Keystone Ridge Design in Butler.
Trees would be planted with a plaque placed at the base.
“We would work with the conservation district to come up with four or five species of trees that would be best suited for the areas we’re looking at,” Siko said. “This is pretty standard throughout parks and recreation today, but it gives us another option to help us beautify the parks and, at the same time, help families commemorate their loved ones.”
Township supervisors will vote on the project Monday. Further details will be made available online.
