The Greensburg Night Market will go on as planned this summer, with the first of five monthly events pushed back one month to June 25 on South Pennsylvania Avenue behind the Westmoreland County Courthouse.
Safety accommodations, including hand sanitizing stations, no product sampling and social distancing practices, will be in place, according to Jessica Hickey of the Downtown Greensburg Project, the market organizer.
Originally scheduled for a May opening night, the first market was pushed back to plan for the safety guidelines required during the covid-19 pandemic.
Hours will be 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Additional dates are July 30, Aug. 27 and Oct. 1 and 29.
“After looking over what the PA Department of Agriculture was suggesting and other markets were doing, we wanted to make the right decision for our market,” Hickey said. “We spoke with the City of Greensburg and made the decision to push back the start of the market one month.
“The street we use is one way and pretty tight, so we wanted some extra time to plan accordingly, make necessary adjustments and still keep our vendors and market visitors safe,” she said.
Now in its second year, the market will cover an expanded area and feature 45 vendors, an increase from 30 vendors last year. Vendors include farmers, makers, growers, artisans and local breweries, distilleries and wineries.
In 2019, the market hosted three dates on Pennsylvania Avenue in conjunction with the Westmoreland Cultural Trust’s TGIS Concert Series and three at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. This year, the market will stay on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Of the late October date, Hickey said, “It will be interesting to have one so late in the season, but we have some fun ideas planned for that date to make it a little different.”
Organizers also are working on ways to connect those who can’t come to the market with featured vendors.
