The moment that inspiration strikes is explored in a new members’ exhibition at Greensburg Art Center.
“Ah-Ha!” will open with a reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday in the center at 230 Todd School Road, Hempfield.
Organizers of the open show asked artists to submit works that reveal moments of inspiration in the creative process, said Jerry Scorpion, the center’s president. Scorpion also is a member of the exhibition committee.
“It’s like writing the perfect sentence or making the perfect brush stroke,” he said. “It’s that one thing that just makes the whole thing come together.”
Running through April 9, “Ah-Ha!” features works in a variety of 2- and 3-dimensional media, both new and previously exhibited. Most artists submitted two pieces, many of which will be for sale.
Artist Debbie King said she had an “ah-ha” moment walking into her bedroom and finding her two cats sitting on the bed.
“They looked up at me and I looked at them, and I thought, ‘That looks like a painting,’ so I snapped a picture,” she said.
The result is an oil painting titled “Who, Me?”
Center member Barb McDonald said she took the show’s name literally for “Ah-Ha! Now I See,” a watercolor still life depicting a vase of flowers seen through a magnifying glass.
“Everything within the magnifying glass is defined, and everything outside of it is a blur,” she said.
Each artist had a different way of fulfilling the assignment, Scorpion said.
“You can have 10 people look at the same thing, and you’ll get 10 interpretations,” he said. “There are so many different colors and styles and mediums in this show. We have a good group of people, no doubt about it.”
Scorpion noted that the show was not juried, but pieces will be judged for cash prizes to be awarded during the reception. Emily Daignault, a visual arts teacher in the Hempfield Area School District, is serving as judge.
“Ah-Ha!” committee members included Sarah Hunter, Rose Sovyak and Suzie Sparks.
The reception will feature a buffet of foods prepared by center members.
Visitors to the show will have the opportunity to vote for a people’s choice award.
