Lifetime Hempfield resident and former township supervisor Jerry Fagert is running again for supervisor in this year’s election and hopes to prioritize public works and the fire department.

A Republican, Fagert, 61, was a Hempfield supervisor from 2011 through 2015.

“It has been one of my greatest privileges serving the residents of Hempfield Township, the township I was raised in,” he said, crediting his desire to stabilize the township fire departments as a main reason for his campaign.

Fagert’s son, who died in 2022, told him to run again, Fagert said.

As a PennDOT employee who worked on toll Route 66 with the turnpike commission, he hopes to bring public works expertise to the role.

“The fire department is definitely a number one (priority),” he said. “That’s definitely got to be under control. … I would like to see us get a regional police force, too.”

He listed limiting new taxes, supporting volunteer firefighters and first responders, restructuring the township’s trash contract and ensuring all contracts are voted on in public as other priorities.

Fagert has been the vice president of the Hempfield Senior High Football Boosters, a 16-year president of Maxwell Baseball Association, a Cub Scout master for 12 years and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Two supervisor seats on the five-person board are open in this year’s election. Supervisors serve six-year terms, and the primary is May 16.
