A 20-year-old Greensburg woman escaped unharmed from a burning vehicle Thursday after a crash on Interstate 70, according to state police.
The woman was traveling east on the highway in Hempfield at 2:45 p.m. in a Nissan Murano when troopers said she looked at her cell phone to reply to a text message. When her eyes returned to the road, she reportedly saw a large truck and rear-ended it, police said.
The SUV stopped in the right lane of the highway and caught fire. The driver lost consciousness. Troopers said a New Stanton firefighter extricated her from the vehicle.
Information posted on the New Stanton Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page said the driver was able to get out of the vehicle on her own.
No details were included in a police report about the reported large truck other than a description of possibly a tri-axle truck or tractor-trailer. It was unclear if it was damaged in the crash.
