U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, introduced a bill last month that could help protect K-12 students from bullying and harassment.
The Safe Schools Improvement Act would require school districts to include a line in their code of conduct prohibiting bullying and harassment surrounding race, color, national origin, sex, disability and religion, according to a statement from Casey’s office.
“Bullying and harassment at school and on social media harm the mental and emotional health of far too many students,” Casey said in the statement. “Every child deserves to go to school and learn without fear or intimidation. This commonsense legislation will ensure school districts across the country take proactive steps to combat bullying and keep kids safe.”
Similar legislation was introduced in the House by California Rep. Linda Sanchez, the statement said.
