Parts of Greensburg are being transported to the 1940s as filming continues for an upcoming Amazon Prime series based on “A League of Their Own,” the 1992 movie.
The Sony-Amazon Studios production began filming in June in areas across Western Pennsylvania.
Crews recently have been spotted around Greensburg and have so far transformed the century-old downtown train station into Rockford Station, featuring new signs and a 1943 poster of Uncle Sam — a popular image used during World War I and II — as well as other wartime images.
On Tuesday, crews shut down roads around the train station, where they are expected to film until 7 p.m. A letter sent to residents — provided to the Tribune-Review by Ashley Kertes, executive director of the Greensburg Community Development Corporation — shows several roads being closed to traffic and parking, including:
• Harrison and Concord avenues between Liberty Street and Seton Hill Drive
• Liberty Street and Seton Hill Drive between Concord and Harrison avenues
In addition to downtown, the production company has trucks and trailers set up at Lynch Field, near the fire training tower and adjacent to several baseball fields.
According to Greensburg police Capt. Shawn Denning, filming originally was scheduled to take place Monday but was rescheduled because of weather. Kelsye Hantz, city administrator, said filming is expected to take one day, but she noted that crews began assembling sets last week.
“We are working closely with the city of Greensburg and the Greensburg Police Department to help make this a safe and great experience for everyone,” Joshua Jenks, assistant location manager for Sony/Amazon, wrote in the letter.
In addition to Greensburg, several Western Pennsylvania towns and cities also have hosted production crews for the series throughout the summer.
According to The Beaver County Times, several filming locations have taken place in the county, including in Aliquippa and Ambridge. Filming also took place in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood earlier this year, Pittsburgh Magazine reported.
The 1992 film, directed by the late Penny Marshall, featured the Rockford Peaches and starred Tom Hanks as the manager with Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna among the featured players. The Peaches played in Rockford, Ill., from 1943-54, winning four titles.
The series, developed by Abbi Jacobson and writer Will Graham, will introduce new characters who play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which launched in 1943. The show will take a deeper look at race, featuring a more diverse cast than the movie, and sexuality.
The series will feature several stars including Jacobson, known for her role in the television series “Broad City;” D’Arcy Carden, who acted on the television series “The Good Place;” Chante Adams, who acted in the horror movie “Bad Hair;” and Nick Offerman, who played in “Parks and Recreation.”
It was not immediately clear when the series would premiere.
