Several homes in the small borough of Laurel Mountain near Laughlintown were evacuated briefly Wednesday morning as authorities investigated reports of a gas leak, according to county emergency officials.

First responders were called to a home on Walnut Road in the small community off of Route 30 shortly after 11 a.m.

A Westmoreland County 911 supervisor said five homes were evacuated.

A gas leak was confirmed outside after a line was hit by a construction company, said Robert Derk, president of the Waterford Fire Department.

The construction company was installing new gas lines for Peoples Natural Gas when the line was hit, Derk said via email.

Ligonier Township Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 and the Ligonier Borough Hose company assisted at the scene, Derk said.

Peoples Gas also responded to the report, a 911 supervisor said.
