One person was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital Tuesday morning after a car apparently drove through a yard and onto railroad tracks in East Huntingdon.
Fire Chief Brian Kite said firefighters cut the roof off a Honda Accord to free the male passenger who was trapped inside. The crash was reported just before 10:30 a.m. about 100 feet off Route 31 along the tracks in the village of Tarrs.
State police said James V. Sanmarco III, 35, of Mt. Pleasant sustained serious injuries. He was trapped for about 10 minutes while firefighters worked.
“We had to basically cut the car to get him out,” Kite said.
Troopers said the driver lost control of the car, went off the road, hit a mailbox and crashed. The driver, a 41-year-old Mt. Pleasant man, was taken into custody for suspicion of impaired driving, police said. No charges had been filed against him as of Wednesday morning.
The driver, who was not hurt, sat in the back of a trooper’s car at the scene.
