A car veered over a hillside along the Allegheny River in Springdale Township and crashed into a billboard Sunday afternoon, injuring the woman who was driving, officials said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., officials received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Freeport Road just south of the New Kensington Bridge.

Initial reports indicated that a person was trapped inside the car and might need to be rescued.

Police arrived to find a red Subaru wedged beneath a billboard for FeedingAmerica.org.

The billboard, itself, remained intact while its supporting frame was damaged and bent. Pieces of the car were strewn about the brush yards from an active railroad line.

Soon after Springdale police arrived, the woman who was driving was able to get herself out of the vehicle, Allegheny Valley fire Chief Kevin Funkhouser said.

She seemed coherent but was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, Funkhouser said.

The extent of the woman’s injuries was unclear.

Funkhouser said it’s also unclear what caused her car to veer off the road.

Springdale Township police are investigating.

A tow truck removed the vehicle, and the site was cleared by about 6:30 p.m.
