New Kensington council Monday hired three new police officers to fill vacancies created by retirements, city Clerk Dennis Scarpiniti said.

Michael A. McSherry of Leechburg, Jerry Hobeck of New Kensington and Jeffrey Vertullo of Export were selected from a list approved last week by the city’s Civil Service Commission. They still have to pass physical and psychological examinations, Scarpiniti said.

They will be paid a starting salary of $50,248.

The police department roster has 19 officers on it and, by hiring three people, the department will be near its peak staffing of 23, Scarpiniti said.

The money for the new officers is in the police department budget, he said.
