A New Kensington police officer who was trying to break up a fight between two women has charged one of them with felony aggravated assault after she began punching him in the head.
Katelyn Marie Conrad, 27, of the 1800 block of Leishman Avenue also faces charges of simple assault and resisting arrest in connection with the July 17 incident.
Officers responding to a call for a woman trying to fight with other residents in a home said they saw Conrad in an upstairs bedroom hitting another woman, according to a criminal complaint.
Police said Conrad became belligerent with officers when they tried to separate her from the other woman.
They say she repeatedly tried to push her way past one of the officers to get at the other woman and then began hitting him in the face and chest, the complaint said.
A Taser holster that was attached to the officer’s ballistic vest was broken by the blows delivered by Conrad, police said.
Conrad continued to struggle with officers after she was handcuffed and began scratching and kicking the three officers who carried her to a patrol car, the complaint said.
Several of Conrad’s family members said they called police because she was highly intoxicated and “out of control.”
Conrad’s 9-month-old child, who was present during the incident, was turned over to the father, the complaint said.
Police said they also notified the state’s ChildLine child abuse reporting system about the incident.
Conrad was released from custody on a $20,000 unsecured bond and faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. on July 28, according to court records.
