A passerby helped to thwart a robbery Monday afternoon at the Dollar General in Sharpsburg, Mayor Kayla Portis said.

Police responded shortly before 4 p.m. to a report of a robbery at the store in the 1800 block of Main Street, Portis said.

A suspect ran with a duffel bag filled with items from the store but was stopped by the passerby. The man suspected of the robbery attempted to assault the passerby with a knife but didn’t hurt the person, the mayor said.

The man was arrested and taken to Allegheny County Jail. His name was not released by the mayor.
