New Kensington is kicking off the holiday season.

Residents gathered Friday evening at Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue for carols and the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree.

That was followed by Mayor Tom Guzzo’s annual holiday dinner at the city’s nearby No. 1 fire hall on Fourth Avenue. The dinner, including ham, chicken, pasta and more, was free to all.

Festivities will continue Saturday with the city’s Christmas Santa Parade downtown on Fifth and Fourth avenues.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue. It will proceed down Fifth to 11th Street, where it will turn left onto Fourth Avenue, proceeding down Fourth to Ninth Street where the grandstand will be by the Christmas tree.

Before the parade, a breakfast with Santa sponsored by the Burrell-New Kensington Rotary Club will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. at Knead Community Cafe on Barnes Street.

Free horse and carriage rides sponsored by the New Ken Downtown Partnership will be available from noon to 3 p.m. The horse stop will be outside Voodoo Brewing New Kensington Pub at 956 Fifth Ave.
