Skeletal remains uncovered this week in Sharpsburg are human, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday.

The remains were found by a utility crew earlier in the week while working on private property along Short Canal Street.

The Medical Examiner’s Office said it is continuing its investigation of the remains and is considering whether the site where they were found may be part of a Native American burial ground.

The office said it will consult with experts in anthropology and archaeology as part of the probe and noted that any further development could take several weeks.

Meanwhile, the office said it will take “all measures to respect and protect the property and remains.”
