A former Greensburg man was sentenced Friday to two years in a probationary program in connection with the 2013 sexual assault of a child in New Kensington.

Nicholas Thomas Sales, 27, now of Connellsville, was accepted into the Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition program for first-time, nonviolent offenders on aggravated indecent assault of a child and indecent assault charges, according to a court order. The prison diversionary program allows defendants charged with crimes to serve probation sentences without having to plead guilty to the offenses.

The supervision can be terminated after one year if he meets all the requirements, the order indicated.

New Kensington police said in court papers that the child was 9 when the first sexual assault was reported. The second assault took place about a year later, authorities said. Sales was arrested in 2023.

The ARD diversionary program allows defendants charged with crimes to serve probation sentences without having to plead guilty to the offenses. Defendants can have their records expunged at the completion of the probation term.
