First-term state Rep. Rob Mercuri, R-Pine, ran unopposed Tuesday to unofficially secure the Republican nomination in the 28th State House District.

No Democrats appeared on the ballot.

Mercuri collected more than 7,500 votes on Tuesday, according to unofficial election returns.

He won the seat in 2020, replacing Speaker of the House Mike Turzai, a Republican who had held the seat for 20 years before resigning to take a job as general counsel with Peoples, the Pittsburgh-based gas utility company.

Mercuri graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and deployed to Iraq as a member of an embedded military training unit. He completed his military service as a captain and was awarded the Bronze Star. He later went on to work for two New York accounting firms before becoming a senior vice president at Pittsburgh-based PNC.

The 28th District includes McCandless, Wexford, Franklin Park, Marshall and Pine.
