More than 100 Quaker Valley students and staff are in quarantine after possible covid-19 exposures, and the middle and high school will be 100% virtual for at least two weeks, district officials said Saturday.

The move to all-online classes comes as officials also announced nine new cases of the virus among students. Those are in addition to two cases announced Thursday.

Seven cases are in the high school and four are in the middle school.

The 14-day closure of the two schools is in an effort to slow the spread of the virus, officials said.

All athletic and extracurricular activities will also be on hiatus until in-person classes resume.

Zoom classes will start Monday and run through Oct. 30, officials said. On-campus classes resume Monday, Nov. 2.

The district is working with the Allegheny County Health Department to complete contact tracing, and those who might have had close contact will be notified by the district of the health department, officials said.

“It is prudent for all others to pay close attention to their health and contact their health care provider, if necessary,” officials said.

The district has created a web page dedicated to virus-related information. The site includes the number of covid-positive students in each school building, the number of recovered cases in each building, and the number of quarantined students and staff.

The cases earlier this week prompted Quaker Valley to cancel its Friday night football game against Keystone Oaks. That decision came on the heels of the North Catholic boys soccer team quarantining for 14 days due to a possible coronavirus exposure in a recent match.
